The Provincial Hospital of Bloemendaal, was Hollands’ oldest mental institution. The buildings and parks around them covered more than 38 hectare and completely isolated the ‘crazy people’ from the rest of society. In 1986 this idea of isolation had become outdated, and more than 1300 patients got transported to smaller institutions. The Provincial Hospital still wanted to expand but remained empty when finished in 2002. It is abandoned ever since.

With the photo’s I made of the melodious coloured rooms I questioned the ever so sinister history, in which experimental treatments were still common.
